Born
and educated in Germany Johanna immigrated to Canada in 1971,
where she continued her art studies with modern day contemporary
artists. With strong emphasis on colour and composition she
creates works of great strength in watercolour and oil, ranging
from intricate realism to impressionism, with the aspiration
to create in the viewer a feeling of joy and admiration for
what man has been given to cherish and protect.
Although her desire to paint and the urge
to create have been life-long, it turned into passion only
when she fell in love with the Canadian landscape. Much like
the “Group of Seven” painters and retracing their
footsteps around Algonquin Park, the Georgian Bay and Killarney,
she has been attracted to the beauty of the North. The ruggedness,
majestic rocks and windswept pines, the blue waters and bright
skies are ever new inspirations for her work.
“Nature fills me with awe and wonder.
I am fascinated by the diversity and the many moods she presents
herself. I get excited by the rhythm in design and colour
– every line and form telling a story – urging
me to join in and create a piece of art which celebrates life
in all its beauty.”
Johanna is an elected member of the Society
of Canadian artists and a past signature member of the Toronto
Watercolor Society. She has exhibited her work in solo and
group exhibitions for the past 25 years and has received many
awards of excellence. Her work can be found in private and
corporate collections in Canada, U.S.A. and Europe.
For two weekends in autumn, Johanna hosts an Open House Exhibition
at her Studio Gallery in Richmond Hill, north of Toronto,
featuring her latest work. This show is an annual tradition
and has attracted many art lovers over the past decade.
